As we get older, dental care is important for keeping our teeth and gums healthy.

Just like everyone else, it is recommended to limit sugary foods, brush our teeth twice a day, and see a dentist regularly, usually every 6 to 12 months. Dentists can catch problems early, like gum disease or tooth decay, before they become serious.

Getting dental care can be very expensive because it is not usually covered by our public health system. There might be WINZ subsidies available depending on how serious the problem is. Some dentists offer discounts with a Community Services Card, and some hospitals might provide emergency treatment at a lower cost or free of charge but its best to always make enquiries first.

When we visit the dentist, we will be asked about our medical history. We do not have to share that we live with HIV, but it can be helpful to know so they can check for any HIV-related issues in our mouth. Dentists must keep our HIV information private and confidential. It is also against the law for a dentist to refuse care because someone has HIV.
